What is Intercambio Cultural de La Joya?
Intercambio is an organisation which promotes integration between the Spanish and Foreign residents of Lanjaron. There are several arms to Intercambio and they are being added to all the time!
Charlas / Talks
We host talks about local customs and traditions; these talks are given in Spanish with an English translation so that we can all improve our knowledge of the language – a vital element to fully participate in life in Lanjaron. After the talks it is time for a drink to loosen up the tongue and try out what we have learned! We also encourage local businesses to promote themselves in this way so that we are aware what the town has to offer; there really is little need to look elsewhere for skills and goods.
Tenis / Tennis
Intercambio Tennis plays on a Sunday, Wednesday and Friday Morning at 9am. These are turn up and play sessions and we have a real mix of abilities from absolute beginners through to club players. The courts belong to the Balneario and the trek up to the top terrace where they are is all you need to warm up for a game! We score in Spanish and again try to remember to practice our conversation skills; we have yet to perfect our command of polite expletives when we miss our shots.

Informacion / Information
An essential part of our service is the sharing of information. We try to advise our members of any upcoming events so if you run a business or have a promotion which you would like advertised please let us know. We also send out Fiesta dates and information from the Ayuntamiento although Intercambio does remain strictly apolitical.

Who are we?
Lindsay and Orla started Intercambio in March 2007 having bought La Joya in 2003 but only moved to Lanjaron permanently In March 2006. We shared the desire to become as integrated as possible and to learn all we could about the area we had made our permanent home.
Orla is Danish and was a designer and cabinet maker in Whitstable, Kent where we lived. Prior to this he ran a Building Company in Norway until 1989. He designed and built the Corral where we hold most of Intercambio’s events and which you can see in the photos on the blog. Although semi retired he still makes some furniture to order.
Lindsay is Scottish and spent most of her early life abroad. She recently sold her property management company in UK and retired from her various commitments in the industry including the vice presidency of ARLA, its professional body. She relishes the organisational challenge which Intercambio presents.
We have been married for 17 years and have three children between us; all three are in their thirties and one has produced us with three grandchildren; we expect more will follow! Our families, like those of most of our friends here, come out to visit us regularly and love Lanjaron, Lindsay’s 88 year old mother being the most regular and one of the liveliest!
We are gregarious and love entertaining so Intercambio is here to stay! We hope you will join and tell your friends to do the same so that we can provide a real benefit to our community together.
